Bio for Community Partners

My name is Bryan Hanner, and I am a second-year Musical Theatre and Computer Science major at the University of Washington. I have performed in over seventy theatrical productions. I also co-lead a philanthropic performance duo called Hanner & Repp that I founded with my collaborator Daniel Repp (brosnshows.com). We raise funds for charities including Page Ahead Children's Literacy and Seattle Humane Society by producing our own musicals.  I also direct, musical direct, and piano-conduct in the Seattle area. My interest in theatre focuses on experimental methods for audience engagement and integrating theatre closely with community dialogues. Computer science is a more recent interest of mine. I was directly admitted to the UW School of Computer Science and worked as a software engineering intern on metrics aggregation last summer at TUNE, an advertising analytics company based in downtown Seattle. Using technology to expose people to performing arts is one way I hope to combine my interests.

V. is an organization that plays a multifaceted role in supporting the surrounding community. As UW students, we had the opportunity to see several of the avenues through which Kotti e. V. enriches Kreuzberg. Katie worked at a community center, where she shadowed counseling meetings, environmental planning presentations, and other community events. Bryan and Amanda both shadowed social workers at Jens-Nydahl-Grundschule and Nürtingen Grundschule, respectively. Bryan helped teach English and music classes, and Amanda observed community and staff meetings and also helped with English classes. Hannah worked in a Nürtingen Grundschule classroom and in a free after-school program called Schüllerhaus, where she played with children and informally taught them English through casual conversations. Film Reflection: The Lives of Others

First off, the film was very powerful. It centered around the suspense and terror under the Stasi in East Germany (the GDR), and I felt that the movie mirrored the feelings of those in Germany by never having the audience know for sure what was going on. Germans needed to be cautious and reserved because they did not know who they could speak to or what would be wrong to say, and we feel on-edge with them throughout the film, right from the beginning interrogation scene. Though these concepts seem stagnant, the film kept up the pace by making scenes short and full of action (instead of dialogue). The acting was subtle, and very appropriately so given the amount of secrecy and anxiety of the period. That the movie was spoken entirely in German made complete immersion into the world of 1980's East Germany possible. One lesson I have taken away from the program is that I must be aware of how I am spending my time, both when I am deciding to do something and when I am in the process of doing it. The Berlin program went so quickly, and more than anything it opened doors to further discovery instead of providing answers. The amount I imagined I could do inspires me to come back to Seattle and wherever life takes me with a focused energy to take advantage of the moment. The opportunities one minute may not come up in another, so I should take them in that minute. I remember being in classes with students and thinking that I would come up with questions to ask them later. I remember being in class with the “Welcome” students and thinking about what experiences we would share as I learned German alongside them like I did the first day at Jens-Nydahl-Grundschule.
